Davita Galloway joins SouthEnd ARTS as March’s social justice speaker
Everyone is invited to the event on Thursday, March 5 at Charlotte Trolley

Charlotte artist and entrepreneur Davita Galloway, co-owner of Dupp & Swat creative studio, will join SouthEnd ARTS as guest speaker for the group’s Social Justice Speaker Series on Thursday, March 5 at 6:30 p.m. The event, as usual, will be held at the Charlotte Trolley at 1507 Camden Rd. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

“I will explore my experience as a tattooed, colorful, black woman maneuvering the art world in Charlotte,” she said. “I refuse to conform.” Galloway has titled her talk, “Just Is” as a play on the word “justice” and to describe her philosophy of being unapologetically herself.

Galloway’s talk will focus on her often-unconventional path to success. “I’ve broken all the rules,’ she said. “I’ve been asked to dress more professionally, cover up my tattoos, grow my hair, watch what I say and never, ever challenge the status quo. Oh, did I mention I’m a black woman? And, while maneuvering this life journey as a black woman, I’m often met with certain challenges in various .. situations … I’ve learned that the more I show up authentically, in my own way - just is - the better my interactions, the better my collaborations.”

We’re thrilled to welcome Davita as our March speaker,” said K. Liles, founder and volunteer executive director of SouthEnd Arts. “She proves it’s possible to earn a living as an artist without compromising your vision or voice. Her work is an inspiration to anyone who aspires to live a creative life.”

Galloway earned her undergraduate degree from UNC Chapel Hill and a master’s degree in public health (MSPH) from UNCC and attended Parsons The New School for Design in New York. She is a champion for building community, social equity and entrepreneurship.

The event will feature live music by Guillermo Villar’s jazz guitar, light bites from ROOTS Catering and a cash bar with beverages provided by Heist Brewery. Admission is free, but reservations are encouraged.
