About the Exhibit
Consumerism has taught us to crave everything all at once, and in that insatiable hunger, we are never fully satisfied by what we consume.
GARBAGE PERSON, the latest exhibition at Alchemy's Gallery C3, embraces "trash" as both subject and material, dumpster diving into staples of Americana that are both rejected and revered. Sacred and profane comforts such as reality tv, tabloids, and fast food are a spectacular addiction. Pulling ourselves away from them would be like amputating a limb—even if it saved our lives, we would be forever haunted by the phantom pain.
This show is curated by Taylor Lee Nicholson, who self-identifies as a “garbage person” because of her steady lifelong diet of hot dogs, true crime documentaries, and pulp fiction. The artists in this show share a taste in both kitsch and the absurd, bringing whimsy to a somewhat bleak premise.
